Acolyte Acolytes (altar servers) have the unique privilege of serving God at the altar. Training is provided and acolytes serve once a month.

After-Mass Hospitality Provide welcome and hospitality to all following our weekend liturgies. Greet parishioners and help serve our famous doughnuts in Teresa of Calcutta Hall. Or staff our Information Desk to answer questions and help visitors register to become members of our parish community. Time commitment is about 30 minutes on a regular or occasional basis.
Ascension Snack Pack Leadership Team Work with a team of leaders alongside Basilica staff to plan, organize, and coordinate Basilica's annual Spring Community Service Event - a snack pack for Ascension School's summer SLAM program. Coordinate with Ascension staff on contents of snack packs, help recruit Basilica volunteers to pack about 1,000 packs, and ensure all packs are delivered safely to Ascension School. Blood Drive Coordinator Serve on team coordinating two blood drives at The Basilica each year. Work with Memorial Blood Centers to schedule dates, publicize event through Basilica communications, staff donor sign up tables after Masses prior to the blood drive.

Bulletin Editor Do you enjoy writing and design/layout? The Basilica is looking for a co-editor for our bi-monthly bulltetin. We ask for a one-year commitment. Requires strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Publisher, and ability to meet deadlines.
Cantor Lead the assembly in song during liturgies approximately once a month. Vocal proficiency and experience is required and cantors rotate throughout all liturgies. Mandatory workshop on Wednesday (6:00pm-700:pm) before your Sunday assignment. Selection by audition and appointment.

Care Center Ministry Serve at Care Centers. Visit with residents, bring them Eucharist, or help with liturgical services. Background check required.


Children's Ministry - Catechist, Sunday Help to foster faith in our beautiful children. Training and ongoing support provided. Volunteers must complete a background check and take a three hour class, "Protecting God's Children, " at no cost to the volunteer.

Our catechists appreciate helpers and it's a great way to grow in your faith and maybe even consider becoming a catechist! Concert and Event Ushers Greet event patrons, provide information and assistance as needed. Events usually take place on weekend evenings, some afternoons. Busiest months are October - December and February - April, for a total of about 20 events per year. Volunteer for one or two events....more is great! Time commitment is 4-5 hours per event. Training provided at each event prior to opening doors to attendees. Gifts/skills include hospitality, ability to work with others and follow directions. Disabilities Awareness Ministry The Basilica of Saint Mary is looking for volunteers and input into initiatives to become more aware of the needs of those members with disabilities.


Docent Docents provide tours related to the architectural and religious significance of The Basilica of Saint Mary. Tours are regularly scheduled on Sundays after the 9:30am and 11:30am Masses, or by appointment. Training and ongoing support is provided.

TRAINING WORKSHOP OCCURS ONCE A YEAR in the fall. There are nine mandatory training sessions. During the training period, participants are required to shadow seasoned docents either after the 9:30am Mass or 11:30am Mass. At the completion of training, participants will lead the coordinator of the workshop on a tour of The Basilica before they are added to the roster of active docents. If you are interested in becoming a docent, your contact information will be recorded. Prior to the scheduling of a training workshop, a notice will be sent to you.

Downtown Congregations to End Homelessness Work together with 13 downtown interfaith congregations to support the Heading Home Hennepin plan to end homelessness. Gain personal expertise in the issues of homelessness, and plan education and volunteer oppurtunities that inform congregants about issues pertaining to poverty and homelessness.

Emmaus Ministry Emmaus ministers are trained volunteers who provide a listening presence. Embodying the caring presence of God and the faith community, Emmaus ministers are called to listen to the sacred story of another. Anyone who is in a life transition with an illness, loneliness, the death of a loved one, chemical dependency or job loss may benefit from a Emmaus relationship. If you or someone you know is in a period of transition and would like to know more about the ministry of Emmaus minister, please contact Cathy Edwards 612.317.3474.

Employment Ministry Job Coach Job Coaches work with individuals in career or job transition. They may specialize in an area such as resume writing, interviewing, or look broadly at a person's life or career path. Flexible schedule. Requires a high degree of confidentiality and a background check.

Eucharist for the Homebound Bring Eucharist to homebound members of the parish. Background and driving record checks are required to be a part of this ministry.
Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion The Basilica is GROWING and Eucharistic Ministry is growing with it! Be a part of this amazing spiritual ministry. Teams serve once a month. Open to current members of the parish. Confirmation in the Catholic Church required.


Families Moving Forward 2016 Host families staying at the Basilica through the local non-profit organization, Families Moving Forward. Volunteers are needed to help setup and take down sleeping rooms, cook and serve meals, play with kids and lead activities, or stay overnight in the church along with families. This event takes place three times a year. Contact our Coordinator of Outreach with questions or for more information.
Funeral Hospitality Provide a time and place for friends and family to gather for refreshment following a funeral or memorial for a loved one. Commitment is on an as-needed basis, with 48 hours notice.

Gardening & Grounds Help beautify and care for our grounds. Activities include lawn mowing, flowerbed planting and maintenance, special garden projects, spring and fall clean-up, and maintenance of lawn equipment. Lawn mowing takes place on Wedneday mornings. Planting, weeding and watering can be done at other times of the week, according to your availability.
Graphic Designer Provide graphic design services to the Communications Department on a project basis. Work on your own schedule at your own computer. This is a high-demand job with very few volunteers. If you can help in any way, your support would be aprpeciated. We are particularly in need of assistance in designing promotional piece for web and print.
Habitat for Humanity - Committee We are currently seeking planning committee members to help recruit builders, plan promotions, and work with food donors. Great opportunity if you are looking for a short-term commitment. Just a few meetings to get ready for The Basilica's build week, Aug 11-15. You don’t need to build to serve on the planning committee. Help us make the home ownership dream a reality for a deserving Minneapolis family and meet some great people! Habitat for Humanity - Regular Crew Help build a home for a deserving family one Thursday each month or during the Basilica's summer week-long camp. No construction experience is necessary - we will train. Work at your own comfort level. Food providers are also needed for the summer work-camp week.
