Availability:

Tours are either Docent led or Self-Guided. If you wish to take a self guided tour, there are brochures as you enter the leather doors of the main entrance of the church. A docent led tour takes approximately one hour.

Either Docent led or Self-Guided tours are based upon the availability of The Basilica church. Your time is precious to us. If you plan to tour, please contact The Basilica so that we know that you are coming. In the event that the availability of the church changes, we can inform you so that you can make other arrangements to tour. Meeting Location:

For guided tours during the week, the docent will meet the tour group at the baptismal font which is located near the entrance of the main church/center aisle.

After after the 9:30am and 11:30am Mass on Sundays, the docent will meet you in front of the pulpit.

 

Worship Space

While we welcome all visitors to The Basilica of Saint Mary, it is important to remember that this beautiful and historic space is a place of worship. We ask that you be mindful of those who have come to pray and meditate. Please silence your electronic devices out of courtesy for the docent and those around you.

 

Visiting Choirs

Visiting Choirs are welcome to sing in the church space. Singing can take place in front of the communion rail, in the choir stalls located directly behind the high altar, or other arrangements made through the Director of Music. Choral pieces must be sacred music reflecting the liturgical season. For example, music sung in the church during lent, should contain no Alleluias!

 

Tour Groups Attending Mass

The Basilica of Saint Mary community welcomes you to our worship service. We hope your visit will be uplifting, prayerful and inspiring. When you arrive, please let our hospitality ministers (ushers) know that your group is visiting. Our hospitality ministers will be able to assist finding seating arrangement to accommodate your group.

You’ll be provided a worship leaflet which contains music and prayers so that you’ll be able to participate with the community. The leaflet will also assist in helping understand the flow of the Mass as to when we sit, stand, and kneel. Please participate to the extent that your group feels comfortable.

During the communion procession (when people come forward to receive communion), we invite our brothers and sisters from other religious dominations to approach the ministers to receive a blessing. To receive a blessing, merely, place your arms across the chest, the minister will then impart a blessing to you. If you are not comfortable with receiving a blessing, please remain in your seat. 

We respectfully request that you turn off your electronic devices before the Mass begins, that you wait until after the Mass to take photographs and that your respect those around you by limiting conversations during the service. Tours are offered regularly after the 9:30am and 11:30am Masses. Other guided tours are offered by appointment. 

 

Safety

The Basilica of Saint Mary strives to create a safe environment for those who visit our church. Our doors are open to the public so it is of the upmost importance that children and vulnerable adults not be unattended. Children and vulnerable adults must be accompanied at all times. It is the responsibility of chaperones to coordinate a “buddy” system when a child needs to be away from the group such as when needing to use the restroom.

 

Photography

Photography is permissible inside The Basilica. We ask that you respect the presence of those who have come to pray.

 

Fee

There is no fee for the tour. If you wish to make a free will donation, we recommend $2.00 per person.

 

Cancelations

Generally, the only reason a tour would be canceled is if a funeral needs to be scheduled during the time the tour was scheduled. You will be contacted immediately if a funeral needs to be scheduled.

Our Docents/Tour Guides are volunteers. If for any reason your plans change and you will not be touring The Basilica, please contact us to cancel so that we may inform the docent.

 

Delays

If you are running late, please contact The Basilica receptionist at 612.333-1381 to inform us of the delay. The docent will only stay 10 minutes after the scheduled time. If we are not notified, there is no guarantee a volunteer or staff member will be able to lead the tour.

 

Parking

You may park on 17th North Street (Westside of The Basilica), parking lot directly behind The Basilica, or the parking lot adjacent to The Basilica School.

There is Handicap parking located near the corner of 17th and Hennepin. At this location, disabled persons my depart from their mode of transportation. The sidewalk will lead to handicap accessible doors under the main stairwell of the church. From the ground level, you’ll be able to access the upper level/church via the elevator.
