Acolyte Acolytes (altar servers) have the unique privilege of serving God at the altar. Training is provided and acolytes serve once a month.

After-Mass Hospitality Provide welcome and hospitality to all following our weekend liturgies. Greet parishioners and help serve our famous doughnuts in Teresa of Calcutta Hall. Or staff our Information Desk to answer questions and help visitors register to become members of our parish community. Time commitment is about 30 minutes on a regular or occasional basis.
Cantor Lead the assembly in song during liturgies approximately once a month. Vocal proficiency and experience is required and cantors rotate throughout all liturgies. Mandatory workshop on Wednesday (6:00pm-700:pm) before your Sunday assignment. Selection by audition and appointment.

Children's Music Ministry Accompany children's choir at rehearsals and performances.
Choir: Cathedral The Cathedral Choir sings at 9:30 am Sunday liturgies from September through June along with major feast days (Christmas, Easter, etc), and rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-9pm. An audition is required for choir membership.

Choir: Cathedral Chorister Open to children entering grades 4-8 in the fall (unchanged voice). Sing for a select number of liturgies throughout the liturgical season. Rehearsals on Wednesdays, 5:45-7:00pm in St. Cecilia Room, Rectory. Voice check - not audition - by appointment. Tuition is $55/semester.

Choir: Chant Male/Female groups meet prior to Cathedral Choir rehearsal on Wednesday and Sundays to rehearse and sing the Introit chant for 9:30 mass.
Choir: Cherub Open to Pre-K children. Rehearses 5:30pm-6:00pm in the lower level of the school. Sings for two formal liturgies during the year. Kindermusik based with parent involvement.

Choir: Children's Open for children entering grades 1-3 in the fall. Sing for a select number of liturgical events during the course of the liturgical year (September-May). Rehearsals on Wednesday, 6:00pm-7:00pm in the Choir Room of the school building. Tuition is $50/semester.

Choir: Contemporary Ensemble A rotating ensemble of singers and instrumentalists ministers at the 11:30am, 4:30pm, or 6:30pm Masses. Musicians are highly motivated, skilled, and capable of preparing music on their own. Placement is by audition only.

Choir: Handbells Ring handbells for festive masses, i.ee. Christmas/Easter/Pentecost. Rehearses on Wednesday evenings or by special appointment. Music reading is helpful.
Choir: Junior Cantors Opportunity for youth to learn to the lead the assembly in song. Acceptance by audition. Scheduled for various masses with an adult mentor in the cantor ministry.
Choir: Juventus Basilica Youth Ensemble for youth grades 8 and up, leads music at the 4:30pm Sunday Mass, September through early June. Rehearsals take place on Wednesdays from 7:15-8:30pm. Prior choral experience and music reading skills preferred. Placement for instrumentalists and singers by audition or appointment.

Choir: Mundus MUNDUS sings at 11:30 am Sunday liturgies twice a month from September through June along with select feast days (Christmas, Easter, etc), and rehearses on Tuesday evenings from 7-9pm. An audition is required for choir membership.

Choir: Schola Cantorum Semi-professional group. Sings vespers and other scheduled liturgies. Music degree preferred and audition required.
Concert and Event Ushers Greet event patrons, provide information and assistance as needed. Events usually take place on weekend evenings, some afternoons. Busiest months are October - December and February - April, for a total of about 20 events per year. Volunteer for one or two events....more is great! Time commitment is 4-5 hours per event. Training provided at each event prior to opening doors to attendees. Gifts/skills include hospitality, ability to work with others and follow directions. Docent Docents provide tours related to the architectural and religious significance of The Basilica of Saint Mary. Tours are regularly scheduled on Sundays after the 9:30am and 11:30am Masses, or by appointment. Training and ongoing support is provided.

TRAINING WORKSHOP OCCURS ONCE A YEAR in the fall. There are nine mandatory training sessions. During the training period, participants are required to shadow seasoned docents either after the 9:30am Mass or 11:30am Mass. At the completion of training, participants will lead the coordinator of the workshop on a tour of The Basilica before they are added to the roster of active docents. If you are interested in becoming a docent, your contact information will be recorded. Prior to the scheduling of a training workshop, a notice will be sent to you.

Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion The Basilica is GROWING and Eucharistic Ministry is growing with it! Be a part of this amazing spiritual ministry. Teams serve once a month. Open to current members of the parish. Confirmation in the Catholic Church required.


Families Moving Forward 2016 Host families staying at the Basilica through the local non-profit organization, Families Moving Forward. Volunteers are needed to help setup and take down sleeping rooms, cook and serve meals, play with kids and lead activities, or stay overnight in the church along with families. This event takes place three times a year. Contact our Coordinator of Outreach with questions or for more information.
Information Desk - After Mass Help welcome both parishioners and visitors to the Basilica. Provide information on a variety Basilica programs and events and assist interested persons with the member registration process.Time commitment is about 30 minutes once a month following your preferred weekend Mass time.
Lector Members of the Lector Choir proclaim the Word of God during the liturgy. This ministry is open to all members of the community; selection is by audition and appointment. Lectors for each week attend a mandatory rehearsal on Tuesdays, 6:00-7:00pm. Please contact Travis at tsalisbury@mary.org to volunteer in this ministry.

Minister of Hospitality Ushers (also known as Ministers of Hospitality) play an important role in strengthening The Basilica's reputation as a welcoming community. Greet members and guests before Mass, take the collection, distribute leaflets and newsletters. Training is provided. Commitment is just one Sunday a month. We especially need ministers to serve at the 4:30 Sunday Mass and Holy Days.
New Member Welcome Event Help us welcome new members to The Basilica by assisting with monthly brunch or dinner events. Help set tables, cook, serve, clean up or greet and visit with guests.

Opportunity Center Meals Cook and serve Saturday meal at Catholic Charities Opportunity Center, Chicago Ave & 17th St in Mpls. Choose from either the 2nd or 4th Saturday each month, 9:30am - 2:30pm. Food costs reimbursed by the Basilica. Contact Julia at 612-317-3413 or jfreeman@mary.org.

Rectory Hospitality The parish office is a busy place! Help it run smoothly by admitting visitors and distributing sandwiches to our hungry neighbors. Get to know staff members and what makes the Basilica tick! Weekly shift of 3-4 hours. We are flexible with regard to travel plans or personal commitments that arise.
